Cookie policy – Kiwifreebets
A site about free bets and offers in New Zealand needs surprisingly little technology, and this policy lists what it does use. A cookie is a small text file kept by the browser; local and session storage entries and counting pixels act in much the same way, so they are covered here too.
The applicable law
Where cookies or similar tools collect personal information, the Privacy Act 2020 governs, through its information privacy principles (section 22). Collection serves a lawful purpose linked to running the site (IPP 1) and people are told what is collected and for what reason (IPP 3). Security safeguards must be reasonable (IPP 5), retention no longer than needed (IPP 9), and disclosure outside New Zealand follows IPP 12. A choice made in the cookie banner can be changed whenever wanted.
Necessary files
Without these the site would not run reliably. They keep a session going, share load between servers, protect forms from abuse and remember the cookie choice. Because the site depends on them, they are set without a separate choice. Session files lapse when the browser closes, and the saved choice lasts for twelve months at most.
Preferences and statistics
Preference files recall settings, such as the comparison table viewed last. Statistics files count page views and show which pages are read, helping improve the content. Both groups wait for a choice in the banner. IP addresses are shortened before analysis, and no profile following behaviour across different sites is built.
Services from others
Embedded videos or maps can set files of their own, and the rules of that provider then apply as well; objections are made to the provider. Advertising cookies that build profiles for personalised ads are not set by Kiwifreebets without a clear choice in the banner.
Changing the choice
At any time the "Cookie settings" link in the footer lets a choice be changed or withdrawn, and withdrawal works for the future. Browsers can also block and delete cookies through their privacy settings. When the necessary files are removed the banner returns, and some features may stop working for a short while.
Where to complain
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner takes complaints about how personal information is handled. The privacy policy of this site describes the handling in detail.
